SIIJUVE – ICYE Mexico aims to increase the number of young people it reaches and recruits for international volunteering in the different regions of the country. This is being done by enhancing the visibility of SIIJUVE and the long-term international volunteering programme. SIIJUVE endeavours to stir the curiosity of young people in volunteering through direct contact with former and current international volunteers in Mexico through the activity “De intercambio en …,” which will take place in high schools around the country. The students of these schools will be integrated in a project in which they gain first-hand experience of volunteering for a day in order to stimulate their interest and motivate their participation in international volunteering.
Simultaneously, SIIJUVE will approach other ICYE members and partners to motivate them to advertise Mexico as a volunteering destination. They will develop publicity material on local host projects (presentation, videos, etc.), which will be sent to ICYE National Committees around the world to present Mexico as an appealing destination for long-term volunteering.
The first week of March SIIJUVE – ICYE Mexico hosted two events for young Mexican students. The aim of the activities named “De intercambio en…” was to introduce the students to volunteering and to ICYE. Students had the opportunity to talk to incoming volunteers in Mexico as well as to skype with Mexican volunteers abroad. The activities were a success and many of the participants announced that they would be happy to take part in the second activity called ‘Un día de voluntariado’.
The second activity, carried out by SIIJUVE – ICYE Mexico, called Un día de voluntariado (a voluntary day) took place from 24th to 27 April 2017. Its objective was to give students a first hand experience of volunteering and the chance to be involved with the beneficiaries of CIPAAC – Centro de Integración Psicológica y Aprendizaje A.C., an NGO supporting people with learning disabilities. The activity was attended by 100 students and their teachers of a high school in Puebla City, CIPAAC and SIIJUVE. Through the course of the 4 days, the students participated in different activities in teams, for example:
It was greatly rewarding to see students deeply engaged in the activities. Some of them showed interest in volunteering at the NGO in their free time. All who participated evaluated the activity as a success in meeting the objectives set out. The beneficiaries, principal and workers at CIPAAC were happy with the participation of SIIJUVE – ICYE Mexico and thanked them for their initiative.
As part of their visibility-campaign, SIIJUVE/ICYE Mexico has produced videos with ICYE volunteers sharing their experiences. The videos have been posted on the Facebook-page for SIIJUVE. Click HERE to go to the Facebook-page of SIIJUVE/ICYE Mexico to learn more about their volunteer programme.
