Thailand is located in Southeast Asia bordering in the north with Laos, in the west with the Andaman Sea and Myanmar, in the east with Laos and Cambodia and in the south with the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia. Thailand is one of the few countries worldwide that has never been colonised by a European country. Thailand’s name in Thai is ‘Prathet Thai’ which means ‘Land of the Free’.
The first records of Thailand are during the Sukhothai period which was founded in 1238 by King Sri Indraditya. This was followed by the Ayuthaya Period which ended with the destruction by Burmese troops in 1767. In 1932, Thailand changed its government system from an absolute monarchy to the present democratic system with the King as the Head of State.
