Brief description and main aims

The department of Caritas de Esperanza elderly adults aims to care for people over 65 years of age, who live in a state of vulnerability due to the lack of attention from local governments and their families. Likewise it helps those with active family members go to work while their elderly relative is being taken care of.

Cultural Exposure

Caritas de Esperanza is located in Otavalo, Ecuador, a town 95 km north of Quito. The community, La Esperanza de Azama, is characterized by indigenous inhabitants who cultivate plots for personal and trade use. The climate ranges from 12 to 20 degrees Celsius, and the main languages spoken are Spanish and Kichwa, with some older community members exclusively using Kichwa for communication.
 

Main Activities

In this project, 60 older adults are cared for by a team of about 7 professionals who provide the following services: Sychological attention, basic medical care, occupational and physical therapy, daily food, playful and recreational activities, transport service.

Volunteer tasks

Although not mandatory, it would be greatly appreciated if the volunteer fit into the following profiles:Doctor, nurse, psychologist, occupational therapist, assistant, student. Other than that the volunteer needs a basic level of spanish to communicate with the patients and the staff, empathy, patience, active listening, sensitivity, adaptability.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

The volunteer does not require university studies and should have a basic level of Spanish, they need to be at least 18 years old but there is no maximum age limit. They can be of any gender. The volunteer needs to be someone with an open mind, empathy, patience, active listening skills, sensitivity, and adaptability.
