Brief description and main aims

Contribute to improving the quality of life of women Victims of gender violence, girls and boys, older adults, as well as the rest of the vulnerable groups of the rural and urban communities of the Otavalo canton, through a comprehensive care service; empowering users through capacity building and skills development by including them in the various work sectors such as textiles.

Cultural Exposure

Otavalo is a small and very pretty town populated also by indigenous people. It is a city that is characterized by its culture and the commercialization of handcrafts

Main Activities

The organization operates in two main areas: Aukera, which focuses on providing accompanying and caring services, training, and workshops, with a community outreach component; and Tandem, which deals with facility adequacy, comprehensive education and training on various topics such as waste management, recycling, social responsibility, climate change, and the SDGs. Tandem also includes gender perspective training, defense of human rights, and initiatives related to digital divide, new technologies, and security. They are also involved in adapting and inaugurating stores, as well as managing the entire process of collecting, selecting, sanitizing, redesigning, and marketing donated clothing.
 

Volunteer tasks

Dissemination activities that consist of making face-to-face visits (with a coordinator) to different communities, rural sectors, institutions, associations to promote the benefit of textile reuse and fair trade as alternatives for local development.
Gathering of statistical data and preparation of surveys.
Administrative registration activities, response to emails; as well as fill out case entry forms to the project, answer messages and calls.
Adaptation of spaces ceded by the Municipal GAD to adequately develop the workshops, painting, cleaning, decoration.
Support workshops and the textile area with the new clothes and the trading.
Support in workshops with the minors while their mothers carry out the textile making workshops or others of this project.

Volunteer requirements / Skills

Any gender, any age. Volunteers need to have at least a basic level of Spanish, medium-advanced is preferred. Skills such as photography, fashion design, or business management are highly desirable. The volunteer must be flexible to provide support in different areas of the business including administrative tasks.
